Protein & vitamin D

What is protein?

Protein is part of every tissue, including your organs, muscles and skin, and plays a major role in your body — from building, repairing and maintaining tissues, to making important hormones and enzymes, to transporting nutrients. Since an adequate protein intake is important throughout our lives, especially during recovery, it’s smart to know what foods provide a good source of this nutrient.

How do I get my protein requirements?

Protein can be found in an array of foods including, meat, fish, cheese, yoghurt, milk and nuts. You can also increase your protein intake using nutritional supplements high in protein. Each serving of Ensure® NutriVigor provides 8.6 grams of protein.

What is vitamin D?

Vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy.

Vitamin D also supports the immune system. The immune system is your body's defence system. It helps protect it against infections and other illnesses.

How do I get my vitamin D requirements?

The body creates vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when outdoors.

But between October and early March we don't get enough vitamin D from sunlight. This may also be the case if you are in recovery and may be indoors for long periods of time.

Apart from sunlight, vitamin D can also be found in a small number of foods including:

  • Oily fish – such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel
  • Egg yolks
  • Fortified foods – such as most fat spreads and some breakfast cereals
